Texting While Driving Solution: Change Habits Not Just Laws

Editorial by Erik Wood, Founder - OTTER LLC, October 12th, 2010

Texting while driving almost took the life of my youngest daughter. After the shock of witnessing her come inches from being another statistic in the texting while driving epidemic, I designed and built a GPS based app for smartphones that eliminates the need to respond to an incoming text or phone call when driving.

Texting while driving is a serious public safety issue and a media flash point, however effecting real change to this epidemic will need to include a comprehensive understanding of the texting culture. At the end of the day, tangible change will come from the end user - the delivery man, the carpooling mom, or the teen driver... all choosing not to text and drive.

Auto-Reply Feature Changes Texting Habits

To this end, the app I developed provides an intuitive Auto-Reply feature for the user. What does this have to do with driving safety? Nothing...at least not directly. But we have heard of teens and business people alike using OTTER to schedule their own "texting blackout periods" so they can get some focused work done without feeling disconnected from their social network. If someone uses OTTER like this, then I think they will see the benefit of OTTER's road safety features. This is real change from within the texting culture... changing habits and not just laws. This tool also reinforces the paradigm of doing one thing at a time with quality results as opposed to having seven or eight things going at once and settling for mediocre results on all of them.

In this ADHD world we live in, it would be rewarding to see a new generation using technology to focus on quality instead of quantity driven results. Using technology to compliment our goals instead of the other way around? There has to be an app for that...

Erik: it's great to have your opinion on this key topic. Changing habits is going to be hard, but we need to make sure that the CAREGIVERS change too - not just the teens they are responsible for. Myself included!
