After police pursuit, deceased boy's family sues Wisconsin departmentby Shawna Dashwood, November 7th, 2011 The family of a teenager from Evansville, Wisconsin, has sued the local police department after a fatal police pursuit in 2007. The family has hired a car accident attorney and filed a civil rights lawsuit against a former police officer, alleging excessive force was used to run the teen driver off the road. According to the Wisconsin State Journal, Dane Wourms was allegedly forced off the road by Officer Scott Fields. The complaint, which was filed in U.S. District Court in Madison, alleges the Fields chased Wourms after the boy reportedly panicked and fled when the officer attempted to pull him over. Fields reports that the car disappeared behind a hill, and when he came upon it, it was resting on its roof off the road. But after the family's attorney hired an expert to review Wourms' car, reports indicated that the damage that had been found was consistent with car-on-car contact, the news source stated. According to the Wisconsin Department of Transportation, there were 517 fatal traffic accidents in 2010, and another 29,380 accidents leading to injury in the same period.
