Amtrak train and tractor trailer collide outside Chicagoby Guy Kilty, February 7th, 2012 More than 10 people were injured after an Amtrak train allegedly struck a semi tractor trailer and derailed in Southern Michigan as it was en route to Chicago. According to the Chicago Tribune, no deaths were reported in the accident, however several passengers, Amtrak crew members and the truck driver had to be transported to a nearby hospital. The crash occurred just after a.m. on Wednesday, February 1. The media outlet states that the engine car came to rest on its side, while the second two cars of the train were also dragged off the tracks. Passenger Laura Gass, 33, says she felt the train slow before it hit the truck. "I thought we were approaching a station," she said. "Actually, I'm surprised it wasn't worse than it was. I just pictured something like that being worse than that." According to Reuters, Amtrak has a track record of similar collisions, including a fatal crash in June that left six people dead, an accident in July that killed the driver of a dump truck in Maine, and another in August when a train struck a crane, injuring 11 people. Those who have been hurt in similar accidents may want to contact a train accident lawyer to assess possible legal action.
