California Family awarded $250,000 in car accident lawsuit settlement

The end of a Kings County, California Court case came when a settlement of $250,000 was awarded to a family after a 2008 crash killed three local teens, the Hanford Sentinel reports.

According to the news source, Carlos Sigala Jr., Jesus Rios and Cory Kennedy were killed in an accident in June of 2010 when they lost control of their car and veered into a canal while making a 90-degree turn where northbound 13th Avenue comes to a dead end.

Following the crash, the parents of Carlos Sigala Jr. hired a car accident lawyer and filed a complaint alleging that the turn the boys were killed on was not safe.

Kings County officials announced on Wednesday, August 10, that the case had been settled for $250,000, and even though the county did not admit blame for the boys' deaths, it agreed to make changes to the turn in an effort to avoid future crashes, as the scene had reportedly been the site of many crashes before.

According to the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration, there were 3,434 traffic-related fatalities in California in 2009.
