California lawsuit involving patrol officer moves to courtby Shawna Dashwood, October 3rd, 2011 In November, the trial will begin for a case involving a woman suing Placer County, California, over injuries she alleges were caused by a North Auburn sheriff, the Auburn Journal reports. According to the news source, 37-year-old Julie DeWitt was involved in a collision with a sheriff's patrol car driven by Deputy Jack Hickey on May 19, 2009. Hickey claims he sounded his siren and had his emergency lights flashing as he drove though the red light where the accident took place. Recently, Placer Superior Court Commissioner Michael Jacques has denied the Deputy County Counsel's motion to reopen questioning on a back injury DeWitt received after the crash, ruling it was not affiliated with the first accident. DeWitt's car accident lawyer has stated that because of the original car accident, the plaintiff will need to receive surgery in two places, rather than one. According to the California Highway Patrol, there were a total of 426,228 traffic collisions in the state in 2009, resulting in 163,524 injuries and 259,899 vehicles that sustained extensive property damage.
