
City of Galveston, Texas, sued after crash leaves woman paralyzedby Guy Kilty, August 30th, 2011 A lawsuit has been filed against the city of Galveston, Texas, by area resident Marie M. Alexis Volcy after a two-car crash involving one of the city's buses earlier this year, the Southeast Texas Record reports. The lawsuit, which was field on August 22 in Galveston County District Court by a car accident attorney, states that Volcy was driving with her two children in the car when she had to pull over to tend to an emergency. While on the side of the road, an Island Transit bus driven by Martin Filer allegedly struck the back of the vehicle, the media outlet stated. According to the news source, Volcy had to be extricated from the vehicle by local firefighters and rushed to University of Texas Medical Branch, where she was admitted with the possibility of complete traumatic spinal cord injury. "Her fifth cervical disc was crushed and she was rendered quadriplegic," the lawsuit states. Volcy and her children are now seeking unspecified monetary damages. According to the Texas Department of Transportation, there were 636 serious injury crashes in Galveston County in 2009, resulting in 883 serious injuries.
