Clown says lawsuit against Florida cop no laughing matterby Shawna Dashwood, January 12th, 2012 A professional clown from St. Petersburg, Florida, has sued the city police department over a crash that occurred when the officer allegedly sped through a red light and smashed into the clown's vehicle, the Tampa Bay Times reports. According to the media outlet, the city claimed the accident was preventable and suspended the officer for two days. However, the clown, Eugene Weiner, 61, filed a lawsuit, seeking $100,000 in damages. The man said the injuries he suffered in the accident have kept him from his livelihood, as he can no longer tie balloons into colorful creatures for children. After being awarded only $5,000 last summer by a jury, the Pinellas County circuit court judge decided Weiner should have to pay $23,162 in legal fees. "I didn't do anything wrong," Weiner said. "I was the person injured, and now I'm the one told, 'You have to pay.'" According to Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, there were 235,778 automobile crashes across the state in 2009, resulting in 197,214 injuries.
