Colorado tractor trailer accident kills five children, one adultby Guy Kilty, October 18th, 2011 A collision between a tractor trailer and a van left five children and one adult dead on a Colorado highway on October 13, The Associated Press reports. The van was being driven by a sheriff's deputy who ran a home for adopted and foster children, which at the time was taking 12 children from the Kit Carson home to Eads when the crash occurred. According to the news source, the accident happened on U.S. 287 just south of Kit Carson in a construction zone where workers have been repairing the stretch of road for about a month. The construction caused the traffic to bottleneck, which is believed to have contributed to the crash. Howard Mitchell, the driver, was killed in the accident, along with five children whose ages ranged from 4 to 17. Seven other children had to be taken to area hospital, according to the AP. Statistics from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration show that 3,380 people were killed in large truck accidents in 2009. Those who have been injured in a tractor trailer accident may want to contact a truck accident lawyer to see what legal options are available.
