Conductor sues train company after collision with bulldozerby Elizabeth Porter, September 9th, 2011 A conductor with Union Pacific has sued the railroad company after a recent accident involving a bulldozer, alleging that he was sent into a dangerous area after officials from the company ordered him to operate his train in a rail yard in Columbus, Nebraska, the Omaha World-Herald reports. According to the news source, Loren Sweley hired a train accident lawyer and filed a complaint, which claimed he was working on a Union Pacific train at night on January 21, 2010, when the company sent the train to the rail yard. Upon entering the rail yard, Sweley allegedly crashed into a bulldozer that had been parked too close to the tracks, reportedly causing two locomotives connected to 22 railcars to derail and causing Sweley to suffer serious injuries, the Herald stated. The lawsuit seeks money for more than $175,000 in lost wages, as well as damages for current and medical expenses. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, on average, 2.2 out of every 100 railroad workers were injured on the job in 2009, the same number as the year before. Many of the cases resulted in days away from work, as well. All content on Accidents.com is for informational purposes only and is NOT intended as legal or medical advice.
