Connecticut police officer sued after patrol car accident

An illegal immigrant has hired a car accident lawyer and sued a former police sergeant from Norwalk, Connecticut, for injuries she allegedly received in a 2008 crash that involved the officer's squad car, The Hour reports.

According to the news source, the corporation counsel for the City of Norwalk says the case is the first of its kind that has been seen. However Angelica Llanos, an illegal immigrant who has no driver's license, still has the right to legal recourse, the counsel said.

Llanos is suing Norwalk and former police sergeant Ronald Pine for the accident that occurred in the parking lot of the police station. Llanos alleges Pine sped from Elizabeth Street across South Main Street without stopping on his way to the parking lot, which allegedly caused the accident, the news provider stated.

The lawsuit states her injuries, which included sprains to her knee and cervix, were caused by Pine's alleged negligence, as he failed to give right of way and was driving at unsafe speeds.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, there were 319 car accident fatalities in Connecticut in 2010, a 42 percent increase from the year before.
