Contractor seeks $5 million in damages after accident at University of Utah

A hired contractor who was laying underground pipe in a project at the University of Utah is suing the school for almost $5 million after allegedly suffering injuries during a plumbing failure in the school's tunnel system involving hot steam, The Salt Lake Tribune reports.

According to the news source, the worker was employed by Thermal West Industrial Inc., and was tasked with installing new hot water pipes on the school's campus. While working below ground, 40,000 gallons of hot water allegedly spilled into the tunnel along a line that the school had reportedly deemed inactive.

Even after the Occupational Health and Safety Administration OSHA found the the company was not to blame for the accident, Western Thermal lost its largest clients due to the new safety ranking it was given, the media outlet stated.

Now, the company's accident attorney is suing for costs associated with worker's compensation, claiming damages to be more than $4.8 million.

The news provider reports that OSHA cited the University of Utah following the accident for the "unsafe condition of an open-ended, high-temperature water pipe."
