Cyclists in Dallas push for bike lanes after roadway accidentby Elizabeth Porter, January 16th, 2012 A North Texas cyclist was badly injured in a roadway crash in Dallas over the weekend, which has stirred up anger in the city's cycling community. According to ABC affiliate WFAA, the accident occurred on a bridge that had been scheduled for upgrades, including the addition of a bike lane, but those improvements were delayed when the City Council committee discovered it didn't have the funds to re-stripe 840 miles of pavement for bike lanes. The accident took place on Saturday, January 14, when Dallas Torres, of Oak Cliff, was allegedly hit by a car while crossing the Jefferson Boulevard viaduct. Torres had just started his daily 40-mile trek around the city when the car allegedly collided with him, which threw him into the windshield and broke his neck. He remains in Baylor University Medical Center. Jason Roberts, co-founder of Bike Friendly Oak Cliff, says the accident is frustrating. "Sadly, it's one of these things we've talked about that we were afraid was going to happen, so I guess I shouldn't say I'm completely surprised," he said. According to the Texas Department of Transportation, there were 42 bicycle accidents in the state in 2010. Those who have been injured in such an accident may want to contact a bicycle accident attorney, as legal options may be available.
