DUI lawyers note rise in felony drunk driving casesby Shawna Dashwood, January 25th, 2012 Prosecutors in Sarpy County, Nebraska, recently stated that it appears drunk drivers are getting behind the wheel more often, equating to a higher number of felony DUI cases, ABC affiliate KETV reports. According to the news source, the Chief Deputy Attorney for Sarpy County said she's witnessing about two felony DUI cases every week, with several drivers blowing a blood-alcohol content of 1.5 percent - nearly twice the legal limit. "The number of (DUI) offenses is on the rise. It definitely draws our attention," The lawyer stated. The attorney cited one recent arrest as a prime example of the issue. On Friday, January 20, police found a black BMW parked in the middle of a busy road in Bellevue, with the driver flashing his lights on and off. Police arrested the man, 51-year-old Reginald Dawson, for DUI, and found that he'd had nine prior convictions of drunk driving. "It's hard to do this job and not be concerned with what impact it could have on my family," the lawyer stated. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, there were 66 alcohol-impaired driving fatalities in Nebraska in 2009.
