Faulty door blamed in Ohio plane crash

A recent plane crash near the Warren County Airport in Lebanon, Ohio, was determined to be caused by a door popping open while still in flight, according to a preliminary report from the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB).

According to the Middletown Journal, the crash occurred on Wednesday, December 28, after the pilot began having issues with the plane which were allegedly caused by a defect in the plane's door's safety latch.

Pilot Zeb Bowles and three passengers were injured in the crash. The NTSB report states that Bowles was flying the aircraft when the door "popped open."

"The pilot returned to the airport but decided to fly a go-around. The pilot reported that there was a loss of engine power when the airplane was on the base leg of the traffic pattern. The pilot attempted to land in a nearby field but the airplane struck trees and power lines," the report stated.

According to the NTSB, there were a total of 1339 civil aviation crashes in 2011 through the end of October, resulting in 391 fatalities.
