Florida school bus involved in accident with tractor trailer, injures 22by Wanda Derllump, January 6th, 2012 In Manatee, Florida, 21 Braden River Middle School students and a bus driver were placed on stretchers and taken to area hospitals after the bus was in an accident with a tractor trailer, the Bradenton herald reports. The media outlet states none of the injuries were life-threatening, and that later that evening, nearly all students had been released back to their families. The accident occurred at 4:15 p.m. on State Route 64 when the school bus, carrying 40 students, allegedly crashed into the rear of a tractor trailer that was stopped at a red light. After the bus hit the truck, it veered west off the road, causing the driver to allegedly lose further control after his leg was said to be pinned in the initial wreckage, according to the news source. Police reports indicate the driver "“became distracted by a student on the bus," and has been cited for careless driving in the crash. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, large truck crashes around the country led to the death of 3,380 people in 2009. Those who have been injured in a tractor trailer accident may want to call a truck accident lawyer, as legal options may be available.
