
Head-on crash involving tractor trailer kills one in Virginiaby Graham Allchurch, December 6th, 2011 Reports from the Virginia State Police indicate a head-on collision between a vehicle and a tractor trailer killed one person on Tuesday, December 6, The Roanoke Times reports. Sergeant Rob Carpentieri with the Virginia State Police told the media outlet that the driver of the passenger vehicle was killed in the accident, while the driver of the tractor trailer had to be taken to the hospital for injuries, although his condition is currently unknown. The collision occurred near Virginia highway 8, which was closed for hours after the accident. NBC affiliate WSLS 10 reports initial calls for emergency crews came in at 5:42 a.m. Upon investigation, state police speculated the truck driver may have been distracted, allegedly striking the car in front of him, causing a chain reaction crash. In total, five cars were involved in the accident. The truck driver has been charged with failure to maintain control, however the name of the driver has not yet been released. By 10:30 a.m., the crash scene had been cleared and traffic had returned to normal, the media outlet stated.
