Highway tractor trailer crash kills driver

A tractor trailer crash turned deadly on Highway 395 in California when the rig caught fire after crashing in the northbound lanes, CBS affiliate News 2 reports.

According to the news source, the investigation into the cause of the accident has turned up few results. The driver has been identified as 62-year-old Clarence Carpenter of Los Molinos.

California Highway Patrol (CHP) says the area between Hallelujah Junction and Red Rock Road, where the accident occurred, is not typically problematic for drivers. Investigators say the truck "straightened out a curve in the roadway for an unknown reason, before he collided into the embankment."

The police team also noted the tire tracks indicated the driver did not stop, a possible sign of falling asleep behind the wheel. As for the fire, Lacey Heitman of the CHP says the diesel tanks probably had something to do with it, but it was "fully engulfed within seconds of the collision."

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 503 truck occupants were killed in large truck crashes in 2009. The total number of fatalities, including other vehicle occupants and non-occupants, was 3,380 that year.
