Illinois residents fear spread of red light and speed cameras

Across Illinois, residents are expressing concern over an automated ticketing system that will replace police officers when it comes to issuing speeding tickets.

According to the Jacksonville Journal Courier, new legislation will allow speed cameras to be placed in several parts of Chicago, and will operate from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. on school days.

Currently, the laws will only affect Chicago, however residents of nearby cities fear the system could spread to their communities.

"This just means more bureaucracy and more money for Chicago to spend. It’s like Big Brother is watching us all over the country," said state Representative John Cavaletto, one of 50 members of the House who voted against the measure.

Jayde Huebner, a spokeswoman for the Illinois Municipal League, says residents who may want the new system should wait to see the effects it has in Chicago.

According to CBS Chicago, some experts are claiming that the introduction of speed cameras could actually decrease safety. "Ticket Doctor" Barnet Fagel believes that if people focus too much on their speedometer, they could fail to look for traffic in front of them, and are put at a greater risk of hitting pedestrians and bicyclists.
