Iowa State University pays $35,000 settlement after car crashby Wanda Derllump, January 23rd, 2012 The Iowa State Appeals Board has approved a $35,000 settlement with a woman after she was allegedly injured in a car accident involving an employee of Iowa State University, the Chicago Tribune reports. According to the news source, court documents indicate the accident occurred on March 17, 2010, on the off-ramp of Highway 65, near Carlisle. Nancy Willett hired a car accident lawyer and filed the lawsuit, alleging the impact aggravated her previously existing symptoms of fibromyalgia, and also caused whole-body pains associated with sleep problems that have arisen since the crash, headaches and anxiety. Her complaint sought compensation for medical bills, lost wages and property damage, and also stated that she has had to receive extensive physical therapy to treat the injuries allegedly suffered in the crash, according to the news provider. The settlement was reached after the first mediation session. According to the the Iowa Department of transportation, an average of 400 people die each year in motor vehicle crashes, with driver distraction and lack of seat belt use said to be the largest contributing factors to injuries and fatalities in car crashes.
