Lawsuit filed after bicyclist fatally struck by driver in Marylandby Elizabeth Porter, February 2nd, 2012 The family of a student attending Johns Hopkins University who was killed while riding his bicycle says more measures must be taken to ensure elderly drivers are fit to be behind the wheel, CBS affiliate WJZ Baltimore reports. According to the news source, the family hired a bicycle accident lawyer to file a lawsuit, but they have said they would like more than anything to make Maryland roads less dangerous. They are pushing the Motor Vehicle Administration (MVA) to start performing simple tests that would easily identify high-risk drivers. Last year, Nathan Krasnopoler was killed when he was allegedly struck by an 83-year-old driver who instead of helping the man, never called for help and got out of her car and sat down on the ground. The family is now fighting Senate bill 111, which would renew licenses for eight years instead of the current five-year period. They say they hope the MVA will introduce simple cognitive tests that will expose unsafe drivers before their license is renewed. Despite laws that have been made to give bicyclists the right-of-way, accidents still appear around the country. On Wednesday, February 1, an 18-year-old man was killed while riding his bicycle in the street in Nevada, according to the Las Vegas Sun.
