Lawsuits arise as airbags deploy without cause

While airbags are usually thought of as an industry symbol of safety, some drivers have lodged complaints alleging the devices intended to save lives are actually putting the lives of motorists at risk, NBC Chicago reports.

"I thought I could feel my heart coming out of my chest," Lisa Jarrett told the news source after she claims two airbags in her car recently deployed without cause. "It was shocking."

Jarett stated there was no collision and no pothole or curb anywhere near her when the airbags went off, and Jarett isn't alone in her claims.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, random airbag deployment is not uncommon, and has caused many automakers to recall certain vehicles. In October, one motorist hired a car accident lawyer and filed a lawsuit against Honda after an event similar to Jarett's, the news source stated.

This past summer, Chrysler was forced to recall more than 300,000 models of minivans due to reports of random airbag deployment, which CNN reported could lead to accidents and catastrophic injury if the event occurred on a fast-moving highway.
