Louisiana Police Department sued after dog bites man's groinby Shawna Dashwood, August 19th, 2011 A man is suing the Gretna Police Department after he claims his civil rights were violated when a police dog bit into his groin, nearly severing his penis, United Press International reports. Cody Melancon alleges that he suffered severe injuries after a police officer with the department let his dog loose on him without provocation, leaving him "sexually dysfunctional," his personal injury lawyer stated. "I don't have any sensation down there," Melancon told the news source. "I can't get an erection. I'm 25 years of age." The accident occurred on May 30 when officers arrived at Melancon's apartment to arrest him after he was suspected of kicking down a person's front door and then assaulting them, charges of which Melancon denies, according to the news provider. The complaint alleges that Melancon had submitted to the police and was kneeling, compliant to orders, when the officer let the dog loose on him. He now seeks $31 million for medical expenses as well as for punitive damages. Police K-9s are used to apprehend aggressive criminals, as was seen in a recent Texas arrest, when a dog tackled and bit a Colorado man suspected of kidnapping, the Colorado Springs Gazette reported.
