
Man dies, child injured in Florida motorcycle crashby Shawna Dashwood, January 18th, 2012 A man from Elkton, Florida, has died and a boy from Palatka is in critical condition after a motorcycle accident on Monday, January 16. According to the St. Augustine Record, 40-year-old Elijah Hayward was riding his 2005 Suzuki motorbike on Washington Street while the boy was riding his bicycle near the intersection of Washington and 18th Street. The front end of the motorcycle allegedly hit the rear tire of the child's bike, throwing both riders to the pavement. Neither of the riders were wearing a helmet. Hayward was rushed to Putnam Memorial Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. The boy was taken to Shands Hospital in Gainesville, where he is listed in critical condition. Investigators are currently working to to find out if alcohol was the reason for the crash, but initial reports indicate that no fault has yet been determined. According to Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, 350 motorcyclist were killed across the state in 2010, while 4,600 bicyclist were injured that same year.
