Marijuana users twice as likely to cause car accidentby Wanda Derllump, February 13th, 2012 A new study shows users of marijuana are almost two times as likely to cause a car crash as those who are not under the influence of alcohol or drugs, The Associated Press reports. Researchers at the Dalhousie University in Canada reviewed studies of more than 49,000 people who had been in car crashes on public roads in which marijuana use had been tested for. The team found that drivers who had used marijuana within three hours of driving showed nearly twice the risk of causing an accident, especially those that resulted in fatalities. According to the BBC, Mark Asbridge, study author and associate professor at the department of community health and epidemiology at Dalhousie, said the results were significant. "Our findings provide clarity to the large body of research on cannabis and collision risk." he stated. "They also offer support to existing policies, in many jurisdictions, that restrict driving under the influence of cannabis, and direct public health officials to devote greater attention to this issue." Those who have been injured in a car accident that may have been caused by an impaired driver are encouraged to contact a car accident lawyer to assess possible legal action.
