Maryland cyclist's death leads to lawsuit settlementby Elizabeth Porter, August 18th, 2011 On February 26, 20-year-old student Nathan Krasnopoler was allegedly struck by a car that crossed into a bike lane in Baltimore, sending him into a coma for months and later dying on Wednesday, August 17. Now, his family has reached a settlement in the lawsuit against the driver, the Baltimore Brew reports. According to the news source, the family originally sought $10 million in a lawsuit, but was settled quickly, as the driver of the car paid an undisclosed amount to the Krasnopolers. Nathan's father, Mitchell Krasnopoler, believes the amount will do "a little justice for Nathan." "Of course the monetary settlement cannot replace my son," he said in an interview with WBAL radio. “It’s just a small thing that adds some fairness to the loss that we’ve experienced." Police stated that Krasnopoler was wearing a helmet and traveling in the designated bike lane when Jeanette Marie Walke allegedly turned into him, causing him to become trapped beneath the car. Maryland has strict laws to protect the safety of cyclists, and states that bike lanes must be used when present, offering protected travel, according to the Maryland Department of Transportation.
