Missouri tractor trailer accident causes fire, shuts down highway

Three hours after a tractor trailer rolled on a highway in Rolla, Missouri, crews finally reopened all four lanes of Interstate 44, the Rolla Daily News reports.

According to the news source, the large truck flipped over and burst into flames near exit 186 on the interstate at about 4 p.m. on Monday, February 13. Fire crews worked to contain the flames for nearly an hour, and by the time it was extinguished, the fire had left the paper product-carrying truck totaled.

Missouri State Highway Patrol said tractor trailer driver Michael T. Gage, 24, and his passenger Lawrence D. Weldon, 40, were taken to Phelps County Regional Medical Center for non life-threatening injuries. Officials stated that the accident occurred when the tractor trailer allegedly slid off the right side of the road, struck a guard rail and a light pole and then overturned before catching fire.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, large truck crashes led to the deaths of 3,380 people in 2009, marking a 20 percent reduction compared to the year before.

Those who have been injured in such an accident may want to contact a truck accident lawyer, as legal options may be available.
