Old Cessna crashes in Indiana, kills two

On Saturday, January 21, a small plane built in the 1960s crashed in Jennings County, Indiana, killing both passengers in the plane.

According to NBC affiliate News 14, 55-year-old Gregory L. Wehr and 55-year-old Candace S. Wehr, husband and wife, were flying back to Madison Municipal Airport from Chicago when their 1968 single engine Cessna crashed in a field near County Road 600 South. Investigators with the Federal Aviation Administration combed the area looking through debris shortly after the crash.

One witness stated the plane was engulfed in flames as it fell.

"I looked up in the sky and saw a big ball of fire. I just saw it fall straight down and explode as it hit the ground," Becky Puckett said, who lives a mile from the wreckage. "I didn't know what it was. I had no idea. I just saw a big orange circle in the sky and saw it fall."

The FAA says it may be weeks before a cause is determined.

According to the National Transportation Safety Board, there were 211 fatal civil aviation accidents in 2011 through November, resulting in 439 deaths.

Obviously, the reporter knows little about airplanes and equates an aircraft built in the 1960's in the same manor as an "old car". There is no comparison. Many aircraft far older than that are still flying and in peak mechanical condition.
