Parents file lawsuit after fatal California highway crash

A wrongful death lawsuit has been filed by the parents of a 4-year-old boy, which claims negligence by a trucking company and the California Department of Transportation resulted in the fatal crash in north Monterey County, according to The Californian.

The complaint was filed against Caltrans and Hollister-based Bhandal Bros. Trucking Inc. on December 6 in Monterey County Superior Court, and was filed by a car accident lawyer representing the Almanza-Romero family.

The California Highway Patrol stated the crash occurred when a 1992 Honda Accord was allegedly hit from behind by a tractor trailer while stopped in the westbound lane of Highway 156, waiting to make a left-hand turn, the media outlet stated.

The truck, driven by Ronn Williams, allegedly failed to stop in time, and reportedly pushed the Accord into oncoming traffic, which then struck a 2003 Chrysler Sebring and killed the young boy.

The law firm's spokesman stated that suit was important in that it highlights the danger of what has been called the worst highway in the state.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, large truck crashes killed 2,551 non-truck occupants in 2009.
