Pennsylvania Interstate closes for 10 hours after fatal tractor trailer crash

A passenger in a car traveling east in the westbound lanes of Interstate 78 was killed on Tuesday, July 26, upon crashing with a tractor-trailer, causing a massive traffic jam and closing the major highway for 10 hours, the Morning Call reports.

According to the news source, police stated that the truck attempted to swerve out of the way of the oncoming car towards the median, but was struck on the cab's passenger side. The impact caused diesel fuel to leak from the tank, prompting a hazardous-materials cleanup crew to shut down both lanes for most of the day.

The crash occurred at about 4 a.m. in Lower Saucon Township near the exit for Hellertown. The impact caused severe front and passenger side damage to the car, which killed the driver, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

This area has been the site of other fatal accidents, including a 2010 crash that left one dead and two injured, according to ABC affiliate Action News 6.

The city is in the process of building a concrete barrier in the median to decrease the area's danger.

Those who have been injured in a tractor-trailer accident may want to contact a truck accident lawyer to see what legal options are available.
