Questions remain in California crash that killed counselor for troubled children

In 2009, a police patrol car allegedly smashed into a BMW carrying Devin Petelski, a 25-year-old children's counselor, and although years have passed, many questions remain in the accident, the Los Angeles Times reports.

According to the news source, in April, the city paid $5 million to settle the lawsuit that had been brought against them by a car accident lawyer representing Petelski's parents, marking one of the largest settlements ever awarded by the city in such a case.

But although the situation was legally remedied, two very different recollections of the night remain. Some Los Angeles Police Officers still claim the crash was Petelski's fault, however the defense holds fast that the officer in question, James Eldridge, sped extremely fast through a residential area without his siren and lights on.

The police claim "silent running" is a common practice among the force, and has since been the center of much controversy, the media outlet stated.

In the wake of the crash, several citizens formed a campaign called "End Silent Running," which became a rallying cry that was printed on T-shirts, blogs and in news reports of the crash.
