Semi truck crashes, causes blackout for hundreds of Maine residents

When the driver of a tractor trailer allegedly swerved off the road to avoid hitting an animal, the ensuing crash knocked out power for hundreds of residents in Kennebunk, Maine, according to Seacoast Online.

The news provider states that the tractor trailer was driving with a heavy load of peat moss, which spilled onto Mill Street as the truck overturned, striking a utility pole and causing the power outage.

Sharon Staz, a worker at the Kennebunk Light and Power District, told the news source that up to 1,000 customers lost power when the crash occurred. Before power could be restored the pole had to be replaced, a process that took a little over 11 hours.

Local police officers estimate the extent of the damage to be roughly $150,000. The accident shut down Mill Street for hours, as heavy equipment had to be brought in to clean up the mess of peat moss that had spilled onto the roadway.

The crash occurred at the same time another tractor trailer flipped in Newry, Maine, spilling its load of wood and leaking diesel fuel onto the street, according to WMTW news.
