Small plane crash leaves pilot critically injured

A pilot who attempted to land a small plane in Humboldt County, California, remains in critical condition days after the accident occurred, The Associated Press reports.

According to the media outlet, Flight instructor Dennis Lichty was giving a lesson on Friday, February 3, when the Cessna 172-E in which they were flying went down while trying to land at Humboldt County airport in the remote town of Dinsmore.

Lichty remains in the hospital with several broken bones and facial injuries, and his condition has been downgraded from serious to critical. Tyler Lewis, the student pilot, suffered only minor injuries in the accident.

According to the Eurkea Times-Standard, Lewis asked Lichty to take over landing in turbulence that arose as they approached the airport. As the plane inched lower, a gust of wind pushed the plane off course.

"It was pretty scary," Lewis said.

The plane was owned by Lewis, who said he has been flying for a little over a year. He says he plans to keep up with his flight plans.

"I plan to continue training at some point," he said. "It's something I've always wanted to do."

Those who have been injured in such an accident may want to contact an aviation accident lawyer to assess legal options.
