Small Texas town fed up with speed trap reputation

In the small town of Estelline, Texas, a large billboard has been erected warning motorists that the city is a speed trap that will "ticket every time." But the 145 residents in this town don't need a sign to say what they already know, the Amarillo Globe-News reports.

"I’ve heard it all my life," said Farrah Farris, owner of The Beer Store, one of five businesses in the town. "I’ve shown my driver’s license before and it was a pretty good ways from here. It says Estelline. The woman goes, ‘Oh my God, that’s the speed trap of Texas.'"

Police Chief Mike Warren says he and his part-time deputy write about 200 speeding tickets every month, averaging about 7 per day. Those ticketed often complain that the road goes from 70 miles per hour to 55 and then to 50 all in a short distance, not giving them appropriate warning to slow down, according to the news source.

All over the country, many residents are up in arms about the use of speed traps to fund towns. Many allege police are issuing frivolous traffic violations to help departments stay afloat in hard economic times.
