Soccer star sues for millions after fatal car accident

Charlie Davies, a striker for the D.C. United soccer club, has filed a $20 million lawsuit against a nightclub owner who allegedly over-served alcohol at a party to a guest who reportedly caused a fatal accident.

According to the Washington Post, the complaint was filed in the D.C. Superior Court and names Das Enterprises, owner of the Shadow Room nightclub and Red Bull North America, the host of the party, as defendants.

The suit alleges that the defendants continued to serve alcohol to Maria Alejandra Espinoza despite obvious signs of intoxication, who then drove home, allegedly causing the crash. In the accident, Ashley Roberta was killed, while Davies suffered a ruptured bladder, brain hemorrhaging, broken ribs and facial, leg and elbow fractures. Now, a car accident lawyer is seeking damages for the athlete.

Davies was reportedly unable to play in the 2010 World Cup because of his injuries, and will "continue to suffer great pain of body and mind," according to the lawsuit.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, there were 162 alcohol-related traffic deaths in 2009.
