South Carolina State Police investigate fatal motorcycle accident in Florence County

Officials from the South Carolina highway Patrol have begun an investigation of a fatal accident that left one motorcyclist dead near Scranton in Florence County, South Carolina Live reports.

According to the media outlet, troopers from state patrol say 36-year-old Joseph Gaskins was riding his motorcycle when he allegedly struck the back of a tractor trailer that was parked on the side of West Lee Flowers Road.

According to NBC affiliate WMBF, South Carolina Highway Patrol said the accident occurred at about 7:15 p.m. on Wednesday, December 7, and the investigation into the cause of the accidents is still ongoing.

According to the South Carolina Department of Public Safety, as of December 4, there have been 762 roadway fatalities in 2011, compared to 746 highway deaths in the same period of the year before. Through midnight, December 4, 98 motorcyclists were killed on state roads and highways, compared to 81 motorcycle deaths during the same period of 2010.
