Texas Country Club pays $1 million in car accident lawsuit

The family of a man killed in a car wreck received a $1 million award on Friday, July 22, in a lawsuit filed against Southern Oaks Country Club, claiming the club's employees served too much alcohol to the man who caused the fatal accident, the Star-Telegram reports.

Lance Shetler was killed when his vehicle crashed head on with a car driven by Mark Charles Pierce, whose blood alcohol was nearly double the legal limit of .08.

According to the news source, Shetler's family contended that servers at the country club did not cease to serve Pierce alcohol, even after he was visibly intoxicated at the club where he was playing golf with his uncle. He allegedly bought "at least 12 cans of beer" by 12:30 p.m., and six more at the ninth hole. After the game, servers continued to give him alcohol at the clubhouse, the Shetlers' auto accident attorney stated.

According to the Texas Department of Transportation, the legal limit for operating a vehicle is .08, with extra penalties attached to a blood alcohol level that is double the limit.
