Tractor trailer accident leads to recommended ban on trucker cell phone useby Elizabeth Porter, September 14th, 2011 On Tuesday, September 13, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) issued a statement saying it would go further than any previous attempt to regulate the use of cell phones by drivers in large, commercial trucks, according to The Associated Press. The media outlet reports that the proposal came after a Washington hearing found that a truck driver had been using his cell phone prior to an accident in 2010 that killed 11 people on an interstate in Kentucky. Investigators found that driver Kenneth Laymon's cell phone had a call that lasted for one second at the same time the crash was reported. Prior recommendations on cell phone use have been made, but the NTSB's newest proposal hopes to significantly change existing laws. "This is the most comprehensive recommendation we've made," NTSB chairman Deborah Hersman told the news source. According to the AAA Foundation, preliminary findings from a field study of a sample of truck drivers found that sending text messages while driving increased the likelihood of truck accidents by a factor of 23. Motorists who have been injured by tractor trailers are encouraged to seek a truck accident lawyer, as legal options may be available.
