Traffic cameras may get the red light in Iowa

Iowa lawmakers are targeting red light and speed cameras with gusto in 2012, supported by public opposition that has grown immensely across the state, the Waterloo Cedar Falls Courier reports.

According to the news source, members of the state legislature have created bills to ban the cameras and have them removed from streets around the city. Other vehement supporters have taken to the streets, such as the American Civil Liberties Union, which has reported more than 10,000 signatures in support of a ban.

Governor Terry Branstad affirmed he would sign legislation that would ban the cameras.

"I think it's unfair," Branstad told the news source. "I had a personal experience two years ago in the desert of Arizona, and I found out two months later I got a ticket for going 10 miles over in a rental car out in the desert. I paid a $200 fine."

Outrage over the cameras isn't limited to Iowa. All over the country, citizens are expressing their opposition to the cameras, which issue speeding tickets and other traffic violations through an automated system.

Supporters of the ban say the machines do not take into account outside factors, which a police officer might do.
