Truck driver dies of heart attack before North Carolina crash

On Friday, January 6, a tractor trailer allegedly lost control on Interstate 85 in Grover, North Carolina, crashing into the center median and causing major traffic delays in either direction, CBS Affiliate WBTV reports.

According to the news source, the South Carolina Highway Patrol said the incident occurred at about 1 p.m. in the southbound lanes of the highway at the North Carolina/South Carolina border. The crash closed traffic for much of the afternoon.

Cherokee County Coroner Dennis Fowler performed an autopsy of the truck driver, who was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency officials, and found that 62-year-old Bobby Jay Whitner had died of a heat attack.

"Mr. Whitner drove into the median at the 106 mile marker and crossed over the south bound lanes of the interstate before crashing through a guard rail and plummeted down a 40 foot embankment. Whitener was wearing a seat belt and stayed with the tractor that separated from the box trailer it was pulling on impact," Fowler said.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, large truck crashes killed a total of 3,380 people across the country in 2009.

Those injured in such an accident may want to contact a truck accident lawyer, as legal action may be an option.
