Truck rollover on MassPike causes four-mile traffic jam

On Monday, January 23, a tractor trailer allegedly collided with a sport utility vehicle on the Massachusetts Turnpike in Warren, which caused a traffic jam that extended for four miles in the eastbound lanes of Interstate 90.

According to The Republic,  Massachusetts State Police Trooper Darren Specht stated that the accident occurred at about 5:25 a.m., when the truck driver allegedly fell asleep at the wheel and rear-ended the SUV. The truck then hit a guardrail and rolled off the road and down an embankment.

The truck driver received minor injuries and was taken to Wing Memorial Hospital in Palmer, while the SUV driver was unharmed, the media outlet stated. Emergency crews worked for several hours to clean up the crash site, causing traffic to be clustered into one lane between Exits 8 and 9.

The crash remains under investigation, although no charges have been filed in the crash.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, a total of 3,380 people were killed in large truck crashes in 2009, compared to 4,245 deaths the year before.
