TV star Darrell Hammond sues after New York car accidentby Shawna Dashwood, August 31st, 2011 Darrell Hammond, who reached fame after appearing on Saturday Night Live for 12 years, is still recovering from a car accident in June, and has filed a lawsuit regarding the Sag Harbor, New York, accident, the New York Post reports. According to his car accident attorney, Hammond suffered broken ribs and a severe back injury in the crash, and allegedly has difficulty standing up for long periods. "It affects his ability to perform," she said. "He's in pain, and had to cancel many performances. He can't fly and he can't stand up." The comedian has canceled the two final performances of his one-man play "Tru," in which he played Truman Capote, the news provider stated. The complaint seeks an unspecified amount of money in damages from Jose J. Mendez, the other driver involved in the accident, as well as the driver of Hammond's car, Dona Monteleone. The lawsuit against Hammond's friend is "just a formality for insurance purposes," his attorney told the Post. According to the New York Department of Motor Vehicles, there were 314,974 accidents in New York State in 2009.
