A couple from Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, was killed on Sunday, November 27, after their car was allegedly hit by a tractor trailer in Bethel Township, authorities told the Reading Eagle.

According to the news source, the crash occurred in the eastbound lanes of Interstate 78 shortly after 4 a.m., between the exits for Midway Road and Route 419. Epifanio A. Cepeda, 73, was pronounced dead at the seen by county officials while his wife, 64-year-old Teofila Nunez De Cepeda, was rushed to Reading Hospital by medical helicopter, where she was also pronounced dead at 5:29.

Police reports indicate that Cepeda was allegedly struck from behind by a tractor trailer, however the events leading up to the accident have not yet been determined. Truck driver Charles L. Wenger, of Harrisonburg, Virginia, was not injured in the accident.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, large truck crashes killed 2,551 motorists in 2009, while 503 truck drivers were killed in accidents.
