Washington train accident leads to injuriesby Graham Allchurch, January 20th, 2012 On Wednesday, January 18, a man was hit by a train in Yakima, Washington, near West Bartlett Place and suffered serious injuries, although officials stated they are not expected to be life-threatening. The Yakima Herald reports the the man was hit by a Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BNSF) train. Reports indicate the man came out of a ditch and onto the railroad tracks near a railroad crossing. The engineers says he saw the man on the tracks and applied the breaks, but the massive weight of the train kept the rail car traveling at about 25-30 miles per hour when it struck the man. Yakima Fire Department Capt. Brandon Dorenbush stated the man was thrown about 35 feet from the tracks after being struck by the locomotive. The man's injuries are said to be non-life threatening, and he is expected to recover. BNSF has been the focus of train accident investigations before in Washington, according to The Associated Press. In January 2011, two men were killed in separate accidents around Seattle, and investigations were conducted in both cases. Those injured in such an incident may want to contact a train accident lawyer to assess possible legal options.
