While the holiday season is a time of celebration for family and friends, it also can be a dangerous time to be on the road due to the increase in car accidents whether that be related to alcohol, stress or recklessness. During the months between Thanksgiving and New Years, you should be especially mindful while driving as this time of year presents extra complications as people travel to visit loved ones which creates the greater likelihood of accidents. By following some of these safety precautions, however, you can make the holidays safer for everyone and avoid an accident.

  • Consider leaving early. Allow yourself plenty of time so that you won't be rushing to get to your destination.
  • Avoid peak travel dates. Typically, the day before a holiday is the most heavily congested day. You might avoid traffic by traveling on the holiday itself.
  • Buckle up. It's been proven time and again that a seat belt can save a life in a car accident. Make sure everyone is buckled up properly with seat belts and child restraint or booster seats.
  • Plan out a route ahead of time. Map out your route with alternatives to save time in case you get lost or if there is traffic.
  • Don't use your cell phone. It is dangerous to use your cell phone while driving as it serves as a distraction to driving. Pull off the road to use your cell phone in case of an emergency.
  • Don't drink and drive. It is against the law. Always have a designated driver if there will be drinking.

Have a Safe and Happy Holiday.
