Choosing a Driving School

by Peter Nero, July 19th, 2010

Car accidents are the leading cause of death for inexperienced drivers. Driving schools play an important role in not only keeping you safe but others from harm. As a future or new driver, it is your responsibility to educate and protect yourself on the road. Selecting a driving school is an important decision as it will help ready yourself for being on the road especially for new drivers such as teens.

While each school differs, courses are generally written by traffic professionals who are educated about the road rules that include driving tips in addition to information about traffic laws to educate the new/future driver. Driving schools not only keep roads safe but accident free records help drivers safe money on auto insurance. To help you choose the best driving school, here are some tips:

  • Check the driving school instructor's license status by calling your local DMV. Are the instructors accredited? Experienced?
  • Contact your local Better Business Bureau. The Business Bureau website is a good source of information for complaints.
  • Is the school recognized by insurance companies?
  • Is there a low student/teacher ratio?
  • Ask about their vehicles. Are they in good shape? Are they using clean, updated models?
  • Compare driving school costs by shopping around. Try calling at least three driving schools before making a decision. The cheapest may not always be the best choice.
