Tips for Interviewing a Physical Therapist

by Peter Nero, July 20th, 2010

Don't take injuries lightly and hope that they will go away after an accident or injury. Car accidents and personal injuries such as spinal cord, slip and falls and work, can leave you severely debilitated. A certified physical therapist will create a unique exercise program so that you will be able to slowly increase your mobility and enhance muscle strength. Finding a good physical therapist is important not only to your recovery, but also in avoiding pain in the future. Below is a list of some questions to ask before signing on for physical therapy treatment:

  • Check for a license. It's important that your physical therapist is licensed in your state.
  • Get a referral. Check with your doctor's office if you need a referral for physical therapy treatment.
  • Ask about the treatment length and cost. If the therapist doesn't offer the treatment for which you are looking, then you can quickly move on.
  • Inquire about insurance billing procedures. Some insurance companies may not accept payment or you may be required to pay upfront. Costs can get expensive over time.
  • Schedule a consultation and pay attention to how he or she consults with you. Bedside manners are important.
  • Visit the physical therapist's office. Is the office clean? Is the staff professional? If you aren't satisfied, then move on.
