Tips for Buying the Right Insurance

by Peter Nero, April 26th, 2010

Purchasing insurance might seem like a daunting task but it is necessary as it might protect you and your loved ones from possible future losses whether it might be unemployment, theft, property destruction, or death. Your first option is to visit an insurance agent and consult him for the best option. Even if you do go to an agent, you should research what they tell you online. Research the various types of policies available, compare which policy is best and then decide which one to choose. Here are some quick questions to ask yourself or your agent:

Step 1:

Consider asking yourself whether you need this type of insurance in the first place. Determine what the type of insurance you are considering covers and decide whether you need it. This may sound silly, after all, you are already researching this topic. But some agents may try to upgrade you into things you don't need, and this could raise your rates.

Step 2:

Ask yourself how much of this type of insurance you need as policies vary in how much they cover. For example, some policies cover dollar amounts while other policies cover based on percentage of damage/loss. Some have a deductible. Be sure you can afford the deductible. Nobody ever thinks they'll get into an accident or need insurance, but that's why you are buying it! Be sure you won't be put into financial difficulty because your deductible is too high.

Step 3:

Consider from what source you will purchase the insurance policy, whether that might be from the Internet or an insurance agent. Unlike previous years, the Internet is now a popular platform that not only will allow you to comparison shop but provides honest, reputable sources from which you can purchase your policy.

If you decide to work with an insurance agent, you may be working with a captive agent who will sell you policies from one company or you can decide to work with an independent agent who represents several policies.

Additional tips:

Keep in mind that purchasing several types of insurance from the same insurance company may save you money. In addition, consider group policies offered by professional organizations or alumni associations which may offer discounts.
