Auto Accident Laws: NJ Proposing Stricter Laws against Distracted Drivers

by Peter Nero, September 13th, 2010

Accidents.com applauds the proposed bill by New Jersey Sen. Richard Codey which would increase fines and more importantly, punish repeat distracted driving offenders by suspending their license. If this bill is passed, New Jersey residents could see a drop in auto accidents caused by texting while driving or handheld device use.

According to today's news from Trenton, the initial fine would remain at $100 but the Codey bill would increase second offenses to $250 and then to $500 for subsequent. A 60-day license suspension would be imposed for chronic distracted driving after their third offense. The bill gets its first hearing in the Senate Law and Public Safety Committee Monday.
